Fort Worth is a tornado hotspot. Do you have a plan in place for when the next big storm hits? SERVPRO is prepared for any disaster and we want you to be too. The safety of our citizens is the most important thing, so here are our top storm safety tips.

1. Have a Plan and Supplies

If you don’t have a storm shelter or basement, you should designate a sturdy-framed room in your home or business that has no windows like a central bathroom, pantry or closet.

Have on hand a stash of emergency supplies: bottled water, non-perishable foods, candles, lighters, flashlights, batteries, battery-powered radio (for updates), a camera, and comfort items like blankets or pillows. A portable battery pack or small generator keeps your phone charged.

When a powerful tornado hits, it’s good to shield yourself with something thick for coverage from debris if the roof peels off (such as a mattress).

2. Heed Warnings and Advisories

If the power goes out, a battery-powered device like a radio or a cell phone comes in handy so you can still receive information about tornado warnings. Take shelter immediately when advised to do so and remain there until you have the all-clear.

During electrical storms, stay away from bodies of water and don’t use electronics that are plugged into the wall.

3. Brave the Aftermath

When it’s time to move out of your shelter, watch your head and your step. Debris could still be falling, and there is likely to be a lot of glass on the ground (or other sharp objects).

Seek medical attention for any injuries in your party. Once everyone is safe and accounted for, use your camera or cell phone to take pictures of the damage. Next, contact your insurance company to initiate a claim.

Do not reenter the property until it has been deemed safe to do so by the authorities. If your insurance policy offers no provisions for temporary housing, and you have no one else to stay with, contact the Red Cross for assistance.
