Steps for Removing Soot from Clothing

To keep the stain from getting worse, follow these steps for how to remove soot from fabric.

• Remove loose soot - Shake off the excess soot before it has a chance to add more to the stains. Be careful not to shake the soot onto other materials that might stain. Take it outdoors or shake it into a trash bag (or another disposable plastic item).
• Flush out the soot - Using cold water, rinse both sides of the fabric to force the soot out. High-pressure water can be more effective with this.
• Pretreat - Mix a solution of water and stain remover like sodium percarbonate (Oxiclean). Submerge the fabric and leave it to soak.
• Wash - Without rinsing out the pretreatment, put the item into the washing machine by itself. Launder the item on the highest temperature setting. You may use laundry detergent and bleach for white items (or color-safe bleach as needed). Borax and washing soda are also effective at fighting stubborn stains in the washing machine cycle.
• Observe - After the wash cycle is complete, remove the item and examine it. If the stain is still there, do not place it in the dryer as this will set the stain. Instead, use these other treatments:
• Alcohol - dab the stain with rubbing alcohol using the sponge. Avoid rubbing the stain as this pushes the soot further in. You’ll want to extract the stain with a dabbing motion.
• Salt - Pour salt over the stain and let it sit for several hours. The salt soaks up some of the soot.
• Formula 409 - Douse the material with Formula 409 to dissolve the soot.
• Wash again - After applying one of these methods, launder the item in the washing machine again.

• Check again - Once no signs of soot or stains appear on the fabric, you may dry it in the clothes dryer.

You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels it can kill a person in minutes. Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide (or CO) is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels, like gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, and propane burn incompletely.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, each year more than 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning. It is estimated another 20,000 visit the emergency room, and more than 4,000 are hospitalized due to CO poisoning. All people and animals are at risk for CO poisoning, with some groups including unborn babies, infants, and people with chronic heart disease, anemia, or respiratory problems being more susceptible to the effects of carbon monoxide. An excess of CO, leading to CO poisoning, can result from faulty furnaces or other heating appliances, portable generators, water heaters, clothes dryers, or idling cars left running in garages. Taking some basic, precautionary steps can help eliminate the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Protect yourself by reviewing the following tips provided by the United States Fire Administration.

Here at SERVPRO of North Richland Hills, we have a BRAND-NEW Reconstruction division. This is exciting news for many different reasons. As a fire and water damage restoration company, we had everything we needed to be able to come in and restore what we could and tear out what had to be removed due to damage. With our reconstruction team in place, we now have the ability to be a full TURNKEY operation. Not only can we remediate the damages, but we can also replace what was lost. There is no obligation to use our reconstruction team if we perform emergency services. However, if you as the customer so chooses, we have the services available on hand to make it “Like it never even happened”.  

Our reconstruction team is not only for use after fire, water, or mold mitigation services are performed. This team can take on any project that you might have. It does not matter the size. We handle Commercial Reconstruction as well as Residential Reconstruction. If you’re in the market for a remodel on your home, we can make it happen. American Red Cross Disaster Responder Program

SERVPRO^® Pledges Ongoing Support to the American Red Cross Disaster Responder Program

Red Cross recognizes SERVPRO for their contribution to disaster preparedness and recovery efforts

Haltom City, TX.  June 1, 2016 -- The American Red Cross recently recognized SERVPRO^®, a cleanup and restoration company, for participation in its Disaster Responder Program¹.  As a Disaster Responder Program member, SERVPRO pledges a donation to the Red Cross in advance of disasters, allowing the organization to respond quickly and effectively to nearly 66,000 disasters annually, most of which are home fires. SERVPRO is entering their third year of partnership with the Red Cross; their donations to the organization to date exceed one million dollars.

According to statistics cited by the Red Cross, seven people die in a home fire each day in the U.S. Aiming to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent by the end of 2019, the Red Cross launched a Home Fire Campaign in October of 2014. The support of SERVPRO and other Disaster Responder Program members allows the Red Cross to pursue their home fire prevention goals while they continue to provide critical services to disaster victims.

“One of the reasons home fires account for the majority of the disasters the Red Cross responds to annually is that the risk for home fires exists all year long,” said Jeffrey Stokes, owner of SERVPRO of North Richland Hills. “Statistics compiled by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)² show the majority of home fires are related to unattended cooking accidents – and cooking is something most people do every day.”
